The SESI Digital Gallery on the FIESP building in São Paulo gets a dramatic technological upgrade using ON technology
Latin America’s largest open-air digital art gallery has undergone a striking transformation. As part of this major overhaul, the SESI Digital Gallery’s 26,000 LED dots have been replaced with over 120,000 newly developed units from ON. The result is a fourfold increase in resolution and enhanced visual experience for passersby.
The SESI Digital Gallery is a curated space dedicated to artistic expression. It serves to showcase digital artworks and video art. Most importantly, it reinforces FIESP’s role as a supporter of culture and innovation in Brazil.
Famously, the FIESP building appears to float above Paulista Avenue. “Our goal was to raise performance without compromising the building’s architecture,” said Hugo Rodrigues, CEO of ON. “We had to develop a structure that was lighter, more powerful, and nearly invisible from a distance.”
The upgrade raises maximum brightness from 45 to 471 cd/m² and increases resolution from 221 x 170 to 480x322 dots. Colour reproduction has also expanded, thanks to 16-bit RGB processing. In addition to these visuals, the sealed architecture and weatherproofing of the new system helps to dramatically reduce the risk of failure from oxidation or contact wear.
Content delivery and control have also been significantly upgraded via a centralised controller. To support creatives, ON has also created an intuitive pixel map compatible with standard design software, enabling artists to preview content without technical expertise.
The upgrade presented major engineering difficulties. The FIESP facade’s distinctive geometry required every bracket and connection to be custom designed. Engineers had to devise new mounting strategies, pixel-mapping systems and control logic to handle these challenges.
Today, the SESI-SP Digital Gallery continues to be a cultural touchstone for São Paulo. The gallery and its upgraded technology now serve as an example of how companies are beginning to bridge the gap between technical complexity and creative freedom.
