As part of a complete sound renovation, DiGiCo's impressive technology enables the Schottenstein Center to handle a wide array of sports and music events

Located on the Columbus campus of Ohio State University, the Schottenstein Center is the largest arena in the Big Ten Conference with a capacity of 20,000. It can accommodate a wide range of productions, including OSU Buckeyes men’s and women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey games, as well as large concerts and family shows. With such a diverse schedule of events taking place, the venue decided to that it was time to upgrade its sound with the installation of a DiGiCo Quantum225 mixing console.

Beyond its role as a major sports and entertainment venue, the Center is also known for its striking interior. It features six unique terrazzo floorscapes designed by artist Alexis Smith. Created using 350 gallons of epoxy, the designs incorporate more than five miles of 1/16-inch zinc wire strips, each bent and placed by hand. The floors also include 115 tons of stone, mother of pearl and glass chips, prepared in custom shades.

To keep the Center’s new sound as beautiful as its flooring, the venue recently installed a DiGiCo Quantum225 front-of-house audio console paired with a DQ-Rack for Dante-connected I/O and processing. The project was completed just before this year’s college sports season and includes an Adamson PA system, with installation and integration carried out by CV Lloyde Audiovisual.

“This project was a huge step forward for the Center’s in-house production team,” says Jared Miller, project manager at CV Lloyde Audiovisual. “They had been working with a sound system and console that were probably 15 years old, so it really brought the venue up to date.”

The system now has robust interface and Quantum processing, in addition to a DQ-Rack that connects to the DiGiCo desk via a DMI-DANTE card, allowing all rack inputs and outputs to be accessed at both 48kHz and 96kHz. Alongside this, the team at the Center can benefit from DiGiCo’s comprehensive training. “DiGiCo was there for multiple sessions, so everyone was able to participate,” explains Miller.

The upgrade positions the Center to handle a wide range of productions with confidence, offering the flexibility and control required for everything from high-profile sporting fixtures to major live music performances.
