RGB pure laser projectors from Christie blend myth, art and technology in a breathtaking spectacle at Doupotang Waterfall in China's Guizhou province
Inspired by the beloved 1986 Journey to the West television series, a new nighttime attraction at Doupotang Waterfall in Guizhou is bringing this story to life. With Christie Griffyn 4K50-RGB projectors, the tumbling falls are painted with flowing visuals, creating an immersive experience for visitors.
Transforming one of the original filming locations, Revisiting Journey to the West invites audiences to rediscover familiar tales through the interplay between light and water. With Christie Griffyn 4K50-RGB projectors, the large-scale outdoor production combines live performance, projection mapping, mechanical staging and audience interactivity.
Installed and commissioned by Shenzhen Guangming Huachuang Technology, the experience reimagines the legendary 7th-century pilgrimage of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang from China to India. Christie Griffyn 4K50-RGB projectors lead audiences through this story, casting 50,000 lumens of vivid 4K light across the landscape.
“The Christie Griffyn 4K50-RGB projectors delivered exceptional brightness and colour fidelity, perfectly realising the director’s vision across every detail from the cascading waterfall to the cliff-face imagery,” said Di Zhang, spokesperson for Guangming Huachuang.
The installation uses seven Christie Griffyn 4K50-RGB projectors to light up the waterfall, a water curtain and a cliff-face Buddha. Advanced warping and multi-projector blending keep the visuals sharp and vibrant, even on flowing water and rugged rock.
The project also combined precise surveying and 3D simulation to optimise brightness, geometry and colour, with modular installations across multiple sites. Additionally, IP65-rated enclosures were used to ensure reliable outdoor performance.
The result is a vivid demonstration of how advanced projection technology can change natural landscapes into immersive cultural experiences, similalr to the transformation of Nanbei Lake by Christie. Since its debut, Revisiting Journey to the West has earned widespread acclaim, winning multiple lighting awards, showing the success of dynamic shows.
