Christie brings the cosmos closer to audiences with breathtaking 4K laser visuals, helping to redefine the planetarium experiences and immersive education

Reach for the stars at the Space Theater at Taichung’s National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS), which has recently upgraded its projection system to Griffyn 4K35-RGB pure laser projectors. Officially opened to the public in November 2025, this enhancement marks a major milestone in Taiwan’s science education and immersive display technology, and another step for Christie's work in planetariums around the globe.

First opened in 1986, the Space Theater features a large semi-spherical dome and 300 seats arranged on a 30-degree slope. This planetarium had previously used an aging lamp-based projection system, which desperately needed an upgrade.

Six Christie Griffyn 4K35-RGB projectors were selected for the job. This equipment now delivers native 4K resolution, up to 36,500 ISO lumens of brightness and approximately 98% of the Rec. 2020 colour gamut. Arranged in a circular array around the dome, the projectors employ precise geometric correction and edge blending to create a seamless 360-degree image.

Nevertheless, this installation wasn’t without challenges for Christie and long-time partner Dacoms Technology. The dome’s structure, projection angles and heat dissipation, all posed problems, leading to the creation of a customised cooling airflow system for the venue. The end result is now a brighter, more colour-saturated display of cosmic imagery and a low-noise, highly immersive environment.

Museum visitors have praised the revitalised Space Theater, while museum staff report projection quality that far exceeds expectations, particularly in rendering fine details of the night sky and deep space imagery.

As the first dome theatre in Taiwan to adopt the Griffyn 4K35-RGB projectors, it is poised to become a regional reference site and a model for future planetarium upgrades across Asia.
