Panasonic's IP-based Kairos live video production platform brings control and efficiency to the Camper Calling Music Festival in the UK

Sound took centre stage at Camper Calling Music Festival – and behind the scenes, CPL powered the show with a major broadcast upgrade. The technology event production company deployed Panasonic’s Kairos IP-based live video production platform for the event, reflecting CPL’s ongoing commitment to investing in the SMPTE ST 2110 IP-based transmission standard.

At the heart of the production was a scalable IP-based system built to handle the festival’s complex needs. Combined with Panasonic’s 4K AK-UC4000 studio camera, AW-UE160 PTZ units and range of MultiViewers and camera control units, CPL implemented the AT-KC2000 Kairos mainframe to manage the festival’s entire AV infrastructure.

For Camper Calling, the KC2000 mainframe increased production flexibility while limiting the amount of equipment required. This enabled CPL’s team to easily incorporate VT playback, keying, clips, sponsor loops and the festival schedule onto screens across the site. Meanwhile, Kairos’ Smart Routing feature was used to handle large numbers of input sources by automatically switching the video input to the network switch, eliminating any worries around bandwidth constraints.

Kairos was also key for creating nested scenes on all screens, making cutting and mixing easier. Using Panasonic MultiViewers, operators could easily visualise and adapt to live inputs from on-stage performers and guest artists.

Alongside the mainframe, Panasonic’s flagship UE160 4K PTZ camera enabled CPL to capture uncompressed 4K visuals of audience and stage shots without any image degradation. With the UE160s installed on shock-proof isolation mounts, operators could switch to any shot at any time. CPL also used Kairos to create flexible presets for Panasonic PTZ cameras, letting operators quickly switch to drum risers, crowd shots and other key views via macro buttons on the camera mix.

Camper Calling is just one example of how CPL has used Panasonic’s Kairos platform and UC4000 studio camera chains to power a show. With greater confidence in IP-based workflows, CPL is now investing more in training as it brings new professionals into the Kairos ecosystem.
